Glasner-Melusky, Pamela S. K. 2022. Journey Key. Master's thesis, Harvard University Division of Continuing Education.Abstract
Nora Burroughs, the protagonist of this novel, Journey Key, finds herself embroiled in a centuries-old curse—a curse that, if not broken, would put other women, including her daughter, in mortal danger. The hitch is that breaking the curse will require her own violent death, and the only way to confirm her success will be if she wakes up again, back in her old life. Such is the beginning of what is expected to be a 100,000 +/– word novel, a character-driven blend of fantasy and historical fiction. This story of self-discovery explores a few universal themes simultaneously: intentionality vs. fate, perseverance in the face of the unknown, faith vs. fear and a search for personal power. But mostly, whether or not a person can surmount the very human, very primal instinct to survive in order to do what she has been told is the right thing: sacrifice herself to keep others from dying. The book is currently in progress, with several additional chapters written and outlines for future chapters sketched out.
