Byrd, Jennifer. 2022. Haven. Master's thesis, Harvard University Division of Continuing Education.Abstract
Haven is a middle grade fantasy novel that tells the story of seventh-grader Ella Davis, who has been the class pariah ever since the unicorn debacle three years ago. One night, when an argument between her parents gets scary, Ella follows a periwinkle mouse to the glowing trap door under her bed and whooshes down to the magical world of Haven. But what once was a colorful fantasyland is now mired in decay. Afraid of what this change may mean, Ella tries to go home only to find herself trapped. She has no option but to face her old Haven friends and make amends, and she’s forced to do it with the new girl, Zena — the one person her father told her to avoid. But how do you apologize to your favorite stuffie for leaving him behind when he is now the sentient Lord of the Meadow who rules over a land protected by your childhood nightmares? Or the nurturing unicorn who you sold out in an attempt to impress your “friends?” Or the mighty pegasus intent on closing Haven to humans once and for all? Haven is now split into three, and the only way Ella can return home is to fix what is broken — what she broke three years ago. To accomplish that, she must work with Zena and learn to be a true friend.
