Understanding how constructivist theory applies to the NorthAtlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) can help us to understand not only its beginning,
but also where it is going. Constructivist theory reflects the importance of identity and
ideology within NATO. It reveals the dueling identities within the organization that
widely shapes its behavior and creates a better understanding of NATO’s approach as
well as its actions within the Arctic region. A resurgent Russia in addition to climate
change both play impactful roles in shaping the shifting Arctic environment and in the
understanding of how NATO will interact within the region.
